An LAPD officer was hospitalized Wednesday morning after being involved in a motorcycle crash with an SUV on the 60 Freeway near Mountain Avenue in Ontario.

The officer, a 16-year veteran who has been riding the motorcycle for work for about a year, was on the way to work at the Central Traffic Division at the time of the crash, according to Officer Tony Im.

The officer is in serious condition, but is expected to make a full recovery.

"The fact that he did make contact with the vehicle and the pavement and the center divider, the helmet was a significant factor of his life being saved," LAPD Capt. Al Lopez said.

The freeway was backed up for several miles from the scene of the crash. Lanes remained open on both sides of the freeway.
