LAPPL LAUNCHES RADIO AD CAMPAIGN
IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 6

Los Angeles, October 20, 2008 – The Los Angeles Police Protective League will begin running public radio announcements in support of Proposition 6, a statewide anti-gang initiative on the November ballot.

“Californians are fed up with gangs and the violence and the destruction they inflict on our neighborhoods. Proposition 6, also known as The Safe Neighborhoods Act, is a comprehensive anti-gang and crime reduction measure that will bring more cops and increased safety to California communities and greater efficiency and accountability to public safety programs and agencies that spend taxpayer money,” said Tim Sands, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

“The LAPPL urges voters to support the Safe Neighborhoods Act just like they supported Three Strikes and other critical law enforcement reforms. The safety of our communities is critical to all of us,” added Sands.

Some of the provisions of the Safe Neighborhoods Act would do the following:

• Increase penalties for felons and gang members with guns; • Prohibit bail for criminal aliens charged with violent or gang crimes;• Create the Early Intervention & Rehabilitation Commission;• Protect witness testimony;• Create a statewide gang registry; • Punish smugglers of prison contraband;• Establish the “Use a gun and lose a car” law; • Toughen laws for methamphetamine distribution and sales; • Allow counties (that are under federal court order to release jail inmates) to operate temporary jail facilities; • Heighten penalties for criminal accomplices; and • Impose felony penalties on serial graffiti offenders.

An urgent paid message from the Los Angeles Police Protective League:

Proposition 6 is a comprehensive anti-gang and crime reduction measure that will bring more police officers and increased safety to our streets.

Proposition 6 creates tougher punishment for gang crimes, drive-by shootings, meth distribution and victim intimidation. It creates more effective and accountable intervention programs to stop young kids from joining gangs and ruining their lives.

Proposition 6 helps victims who have been intimidated by gang criminals and it funds victim-witness protection programs in our communities. It prohibits bail to criminal aliens who are charged with violent or gang crimes and it ensures funding for our local police, sheriff, district attorneys and probation officers – who are the first line of defense in fighting gangs and maintaining peace in our neighborhoods.

Please join with Los Angeles Police Officers, Sheriff Lee Baca, and Crime Victims United in voting Yes on Proposition 6.
