Los Angeles, December 13, 2008 – In response to the news that two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Abel Escalante, Paul M. Weber, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, today issued the following statement:

“With today’s arrest of gang members for the murder of Sheriff's Deputy Juan Abel Escalante, two accused killers are one step closer to justice. We also hope these arrests bring a bit of peace to Deputy Escalante’s family and colleagues. These arrests by the LAPD are an example of law enforcement cooperation and show that no criminal is safe and that law enforcement will always relentlessly pursue those who run from the law.

“Some people believe they can commit murder here in Los Angeles and simply get away with it. The arrests today are just one more example of how wrong they are. Law enforcement officers from every agency in Los Angeles County have a message for those hiding from justice - we will continue to work together, combine our resources, and then we’ll find you and bring you to justice,” said Weber.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to Deputy Escalante's three children and the rest of his family and loved ones. Tragic events like these remind us that simply being a law enforcement officer in Los Angeles is a dangerous job,” added Weber.
