Learn how to install child's car seat properly

Police will show the public how to properly install a car seat on Tuesday as part of National Child Passenger Safety Week.

The LAPD's Valley Traffic Division will conduct a child safety seat presentation. For those parents interested, trained technicians will be on site to inspect the installation of the child seats in the vehicle and check the seat for defects or recalls.

A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that 3 out of 4 children are not as secure in the car as they should be because their seats are not being used correctly. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death nationwide for children ages 1 to 12 years old, according to the LAPD, which received its data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The presentation will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Valley Plaza Sports Complex, at the corner of Sherman Way and Whitsett Avenue, in North Hollywood.

Valley Traffic Division also provides free child safety seat inspections done by a certified technician. Residents can make an appointment by calling 818-644-8143. Anyone with questions can call Valley Traffic Division Sgt. Stephen Egan at 818-644-8146.
