Los Angeles Police Protective League Statement on Murder of Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Steve Owen

Los Angeles, CA—The Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) sends its deepest sympathies to the family of Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy, Sergeant Steve Owen who was murdered in the line of duty today. Our condolences also go out to the men and women of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office who mourn the loss of a brother. Our prayers and thoughts are with the Owen family during this time of unspeakable loss.

The members of the Los Angeles Police Department know all too well the pain felt by Sergeant Owen’s family and his fellow deputies. Sergeant Owen gave his life while protecting and serving Los Angeles County residents, and as fellow law enforcement officers, we honor his ultimate sacrifice.

This is a tragic reminder that the work of a law enforcement officer is inherently dangerous. It has become all too common for criminals to shoot at law enforcement officers and to shoot to kill. We never know whether a routine call for service might be our last call for service. We accept that fact every day when we begin our watch and do all we can to ensure the public’s safety as well as our own.

About the LAPPL: Formed in 1923, the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL) represents the more than 9,900 dedicated and professional sworn members of the Los Angeles Police Department. The LAPPL serves to advance the interests of LAPD officers through legislative and legal advocacy, political action and education. The LAPPL can be found on the Web at www.LAPD.com.
