A Caruthersville police officer was killed while attempting to lay spike strips during a pursuit early Tuesday morning, according to KFVS-TV.

Officer Evan Burns, 28, was fatally hit after the suspect broadsided his cruiser with a stolen SUV on Highway 84.

The pursuit began around 12:30 a.m. when Pemiscot County deputies spotted the suspect in the 2002 Cadillac Escalade traveling south on I-55.

He was wanted on assault first degree and auto theft.

Deputies attempted to pull him over, but he continued driving.

As he entered Caruthersville, Burns and Officer Richard Altice stopped in separate cruisers to set up the strips.

The suspect hit Altice's cruiser before ramming Burns' cruiser.

Altice was injured while Burns was killed on impact.

The suspect is in custody and faces murder and assault charges.

Burns was a two-year veteran of the department and is survived by a 1-year-old son.

According to the news station, he was injured in July after being hit in the eye with a firework while on duty.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
