Southeast Division Update

Southeast Division
As you are aware, last month I informed you of how appalled I was at the lack of response from the City’s General Services Division in regard to the unsanitary working conditions that Southeast officers have endured for far too long. On Jan. 30, General Services sent in a crew to clean the mold spores at Southeast Station. This is a start; however, we all know that mold comes from a source, and our expectation is that the source of the mold be identified and properly removed. What is disheartening is that personnel who work at Southeast Station don’t have any protective gear when inside that station. However, when cleanup commenced, the picture accompanying my article speaks a thousand words. I will keep you updated on the cleaning efforts at Southeast Division.

Newton Division
It was brought to my attention that Newton Division may have some mold and subpar working conditions as well. On Feb. 2, I went to Newton Division to take photos of the area in the detectives squad room. I was also directed to the men’s locker room where the vents were completely full of dirt and other unknown particles. Providing adequate working conditions for the men and women who protect this City is paramount and should be a priority.

Please call me or any LAPPL Director if you have any work environment concerns at your Division.

Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month, and I would like to take the time to recognize the Los Angeles Women Police Officers and Associates (LAWPOA). LAWPOA has been in existence since 1925, and its membership includes public safety and affiliate professionals who encourage and assist with professional training and ongoing development of all public safety leaders.

Each year, LAWPOA officers an opportunity for members to compete for college scholarships, and also provides members with tuition assistance for attending other professional training, workshops and conferences. LAWPOA officers an annual training and development symposium with discounted registration fees for members, along with quarterly educational workshops. I am grateful that I was once a recipient of a scholarship award from LAWPOA during my graduate studies. I would like to thank the past and current LAWPOA board of directors for their dedication to the men and women of the Los Angeles Police Department.
