Chainsaw-wielding man surrenders after hours-long standoff in Mission Hills, police say

A chainsaw-wielding man surrendered after an hours-long standoff with Los Angeles police Tuesday afternoon in Mission Hills, according to authorities.The Los Angeles Police Department responded at about 3:20 p.m. to San Fernando Mission and Sepulveda boulevards after a report of an assault with a deadly weapon, according to Officer Tony Im.

Suspect on parole steals church property from Los Angeles pastor, leading to high-speed chase

A Los Angeles pastor says he woke up early Monday to find that someone had stolen a trailer with a small tractor inside that belonged to his church. As Pastor Tony Samora was heading home, he unexpectedly came face-to-face with the suspect who had stolen the trailer, which was hooked up to his car. The suspect took off and Samora chased after him, FOX LA reported. The suspect sped through the San Fernando Valley, topping 100 mph, until he eventually lost control and slammed into a Prius.

In a new initiative for 2024, Formula DRIFT will launch The Driven Experience, which is designed to inspire school-age kids, introduce them to motorsports, and hopefully find potential career paths to give them a head start in life. Accelerate Education Group (Acceler8) is an independent non-profit organization supported by the Los Angeles Police Protective League. It is committed to providing substantive alternatives to crime and substance abuse that will change the lives and help build future leaders in Los Angeles County.

Man, 40s, found shot to death in downtown Los Angeles

Detectives with the Los Angeles Police Department are investigating after man in his 40s was found shot to death in downtown Los Angeles Monday, authorities confirmed to KTLA. L.A. police responded to reports of shots fired near Winston and Los Angeles streets at around 3:30 a.m. At the scene, authorities discovered the victim, only described as a man in his 40s who appeared to be homeless, on the ground.

LAPD forming task force to target organized teams of foreign burglars

The LAPD said Tuesday it was forming a task force with other police agencies to target organized groups of burglars who visit the U.S. from foreign countries, and have been responsible for an increasing number of home break-ins. “I can tell you that we have a significant increase in burglaries from organized groups that are outside this country, that are coming into the country, and they are targeting high end residents," Chief Dominic Choi said Tuesday.

Business owner says thieves broke into gym to burglarize L.A. smoke shop

The owner of a smoke shop in Los Angeles claims that thieves targeted his business by breaking into an adjacent gym. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that a call regarding a tripped alarm came out just before 4:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of Fairfax Avenue in L.A.’s Carthay Square neighborhood, but they could not release any more details.

More than 11% of high school seniors who took part in a national survey last spring said they had used delta-8 THC, a psychoactive compound typically derived from hemp, in the last year.

Man charges LASD deputies with machete before fatal OIS

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has released body camera footage of a Feb. 6 officer-involved shooting of a machete-wielding man who threatened officers. The video begins by showing surveillance footage of Jonathan Scott Foster, 38, breaking the glass door of a convenience store and pointing a machete at the cashier. He can be seen approaching the clerk and swinging the machete at them, hitting them in the hand. The cashier then fled the store.

N.Y. sheriff’s office sergeant killed during struggle to detain suspect

A sheriff’s sergeant died early Sunday when a struggle broke out during an arrest at Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel, the Batavia Police Department reported. According to the report, Sgt. Thomas A. Sanfratello, a 32-year veteran of the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, became unresponsive during the incident and CPR was administered. He was pronounced dead by a Genesee County coroner.

LA Votes for Bus, Bike and Pedestrian Fixes as Traffic Deaths Rise

Last week, nearly two-thirds of Los Angeles voters passed Measure HLA, a ballot initiative that will force the city to speed up the implementation of the mobility plan that it approved in 2015 but has largely ignored since. That plan called on the city to upgrade its road network to “complete streets” standards, designed to be safe for all users. To accomplish that, LA is now obliged to add hundreds of miles of bike and bus lanes over the coming decade.
