Council to keep close eye on police hiring

After reaching an agreement with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa over this year's level of police hiring, the Los Angeles City Council on Friday adopted a plan to get regular updates on the Los Angeles Police Department's spending and attrition rates.

Councilman Greig Smith, chairman of the council's Public Safety Committee, said the plan will allow the LAPD to continue hiring up to the current levels but will help the council ensure that the department is not overspending in this year's budget.

"Basically, it's a system to review the numbers, review the financials and make sure we are staying within budget," Smith said. "We are looking at a monthly basis on where are we and if we have the money to hire. It might disrupt the department somewhat, but they will still be able to hire."

Smith said he has brought in a separate motion that would look at how much federal money is available to help supplement hiring.

The LAPD is now at record levels, with more than 10,000 officers, and Villaraigosa has been fighting any reductions.

The numbers are expected to dip below that level, but remain at least around 9,900 and keep pace with attrition for this year.

In its action on Friday, the council said it would get monthly reports on all aspects of police hiring and attrition with joint meetings with the council's Personnel Committee to assess future hiring needs.
