A good choice for the LAPD

The selection of Deputy Chief Charles L. Beck to lead the Los Angeles Police Department is a positive choice that signals the combination of experience inside the police force with the reforms initiated by his predecessor, William Bratton.

All three finalists for the job came with strong track records and commitment to the reforms, but Beck rose to the top of the list with his 33 years of service on the force and his proximity to Bratton's projects, such as the purchase of a new fleet of cars and the Compstat system for internal control.

More importantly, Beck has the internal backing of LAPD agents and officers, while also enjoying the support of the civil rights community. He was in charge of cleaning up the Rampart Division after the scandals, earning widespread respect.

So much has already been said about the LAPD's evolution under the leadership of its previous chief in terms of Bratton's approach to the diverse communities of Los Angeles. We believe that Beck meets the conditions necessary to build on the foundation left for him. For example, he should continue the efforts to support transparency within the LAPD.

At the same time, Beck's appointment also provides peace of mind that the current application of Special Order 40 will remain in effect, as will the commitment to build trust toward the LAPD from LA's immigrant communities.

The selection of Beck is clearly an important step for the history of the LAPD and for Mayor Villaraigosa's administration. This appointment will be part of the legacy he leaves the city.

The challenges for the new chief are many, both on the street and in the organization, especially given the budget cuts. We believe Beck has what it takes to be successful.
