The city of Los Angeles has reached a cost-cutting deal with its civilian workers, now police officers and firefighters could be laid off and furloughed.

Matt Szabo in Mayor Villaraigosa's office says if savings can't be found through pay cuts, sworn city employees face layoffs and work furloughs.

"That would constitute shrinking the department all the way back down to 7500," Szabo says. "Which is what we had in 1993, just after the riots."

The L.A. City Council is considering a proposal to stop police hiring, fire all recruits and force cops to take 18 furlough days.

Councilman Bill Rosendahl says he does not want to layoff or furlough a single firefighter or police officer.
