LA cops applaud city leaders for securing private funding for Lakers celebration

Los Angeles, June 16, 2009 – Paul M. Weber, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, issued the following statement upon hearing that the Los Angeles Lakers, Anschutz Entertainment Group, Casey and Laura Wasserman, Jerry and Margie Perenchio and others have agreed to pay the full costs of Wednesday's parade celebrating the Laker's 15th NBA championship:

"Wednesday’s parade celebrating the Lakers’ 15th NBA championship will be even more gratifying knowing that the money for the event will come from the private sector and not the taxpayers of Los Angeles. We commend Mayor Villaraigosa and other city leaders for finding private financing for the parade, rather than cutting into limited public safety and city service budgets."

"At a time of financial crisis, when employees are being furloughed and services are being reduced or eliminated, it’s good to see our city leaders being accountable to the public. By securing private funding for the celebration, they have shown that they know how to set the right priorities – while still celebrating the Lakers’ outstanding achievement – in these tough economic times.."

"We applaud those who have stepped up to finance the event and congratulate the Lakers on their NBA championship."
