LAPPL: California RIPA Police Car Stop Report Needs a Jumpstart

The Los Angeles Police Protective Leagaue and the San Francisco and San Jose Police Officers Associations issued a joint statement in response to the California Racial and Identity Profiling Advisory Board’s Report on Police Stop Data. “The report attempts to make the case that any car stop above the population percentage of any given race must be racial profiling. That’s intellectually dishonest. Apparently, the RIPA report authors are advocating for some sort of racial quotas when it comes to enforcing traffic laws, regardless of the observed behavior of drivers.” Simply put, if a driver has a car with out-of-date vehicle registration tags, a broken brake or headlight, or is driving recklessly or speeding, then they are most likely going to get pulled over. That is all about behavior and not race.

LAPD Officer Assaulted By Homeless Man At Metro Station

A man experiencing homelessness was behind bars and was accused of assaulting a Los Angeles Police Department officer at a Metro station in North Hollywood. A suspect was behind bars Friday and faces charges of assault on a police officer after the officer was attacked at a Metro station in North Hollywood. This attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents plaguing the Metro line system. The incident happened at the Metro Station on Lankershim Thursday night when the officer was conducting what’s called an end-of-the-line check. Basically, the train was at the end of its line and needed to be taken out for service for cleaning and maintenance. Investigators said the suspect, a homeless man who earlier had another encounter with police, was cited and ordered out of the Metro Station. However, the suspect did not want to get off the train. He refused and then began fighting with the officers. During the scuffle, one of the officers ended up with a broken leg. The suspect was arrested and faces assault charges. As for the officer, he was treated for that broken leg and released from the hospital.

Video Shows Man Claiming To Be Famous Bite, Kick Officer During Arrest At Bank

Newly released video shows the moment a man claiming to be famous bites and kicks an officer in the face while being arrested at a local bank. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers with the Northeast Division were dispatched to the 7300 block of North Figueroa Avenue in Eagle Rock at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 on a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon. The initial caller, identified as the bank manager, told the dispatcher that a man entered the bank and told him that if he didn’t help him right then, that he would “pick up a murder case.” Due to this interaction, the bank manager called the police fearing for his safety, authorities said. Officers responded to the Wells Fargo branch and handcuffed the suspect, who identified himself as Forrest Perry, without incident. Perry had a backpack and appeared to be wearing two pairs of pants as officers began to pat him down near the bank’s front entrance. He then claimed that he was also a police officer before telling the officers that he was “kind of famous” and that he was going to get the man who didn’t help him “in trouble with his boss.”

A 24-year-old man was arrested in the shooting death of a man near the Hyde Park Station of LA Metro's K Line over the weekend. Dwight Panton was arrested Monday near 50th Street and Ninth Avenue. He was booked on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting Saturday at Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue. "Panton was wearing the same clothing worn by the suspect during the murder and was in possession of a handgun," the LAPD said in a statement. The shooting was on a walkway near the Hyde Park K Line. The victim had been involved in an argument with a group of people before the shooting, police said. Details about the victim's identity and a motive for the attack were not immediately available. On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed murder charges against Panton, police said in the news release. Man Pleads Not Guilty In 2-Year-Old Son’s Death

A Los Angeles man pleaded not guilty Thursday to murder and assault charges stemming from his 2-year-old son’s death. Durrell Diontae Daniels, now 34, is charged with one count each of murder and assault on a child causing death in connection with the June 6, 2019, death of his son, Legacy, who was one of a set of triplets. An autopsy concluded that the toddler died from drowning by being intentionally submerged in a bathtub and blunt head trauma, according to Deputy District Attorney Jonathan Hatami. At a hearing last December, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Michael E. Pastor ruled there was sufficient evidence to allow the case against Daniels to proceed to trial. Anise King testified during the Dec. 15 hearing that she was asked that day to perform CPR on the boy, but said she didn’t touch him because he already seemed dead. She described the father’s demeanor as “very” calm. Paramedics were subsequently sent to the apartment in the 200 block of South Whitmer Street after 911 was called.

‘It's About Time To Leave.' San Pedro Family's Car Vandalized With Racial Slur

A family in San Pedro is considering leaving the place they've called home for over two decades after being victims to several vandalism incidents. The Scott family woke up on Dec. 29 to their car spray painted with the words Merry Christmas and Happy New Year along with a racial slur and swastikas. "This is like my dream car. I always wanted one," said Reginald Scott. His dream car, a 2007 Ford Shelby, is now a nightmare after being defaced with hateful messages. The family says this isn't the first time their vehicles have been vandalized. Scott says years ago someone started a fire inside their truck and had their rearview mirror broken. Following the damage the family says enough is enough and is now thinking of relocating. "We’ve been here for 26 years but it’s about time to leave," said Scott. Neighbors say the vandalism comes as a shock and hopes whoever is behind it is arrested.

While NYC Gun Crimes Are Down, Assaults On Officers Have Spiked

While gun crimes, including killings, in New York City have plummeted, assaults on officers have increased dramatically, CBS News reported. “There’s just an erosion of expectation of authority, this feeling that you don’t have to respect the authority of this city,” Mayor Eric Adams told CBS News. There were 4,077 assaults on officers during January through March of 2023, according to the report. The number represents a 41% increase since 2021. “There’s just this attitude of a small number of people who are repeated offenders that believe they don’t have to live in the city or order. They believe they can do whatever they want,” Adams said. Police officials point to criminal justice reform as one of the root causes, according to the report. “Only about 8% of the arrest population for assault actually does any kind of jail. Pre-criminal justice reform, that was over 20%,” Michael LiPetri, the NYPD’s chief of crime control and strategies, told CBS News. “New York City police officers are getting viciously attacked and injured because of the message on the streets,” added PBA President Patrick Hendry. “The message is that the system favors criminals over cops.” Adams did not say whether he would campaign against lawmakers pushing reform bills, according to the report.

1 Killed, 5 Others Wounded In Iowa School Shooting

A 17-year-old opened fire at a small-town Iowa high school on the first day of school after the winter break, killing a sixth-grader and wounding five others as students barricaded in offices and fled in panic. The suspect, a student at the school in Perry, died of what investigators believe is a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and at least one of the victims is a school administrator, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity. Perry has about 8,000 residents and is about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines, on the edge of the state capital’s metropolitan area. It is home to a large pork-processing plant, and low-slung, single story homes spread among trees now shorn of their leaves by winter. The high school and middle school are connected, sitting on the east edge of town. Perry High School senior Ava Augustus said she was in a counselor’s office, waiting for hers to arrive, when she heard three shots. She and other people barricaded the door, preparing to throw things if necessary, with a window being too small for an escape.

LA County Health Department Urges Post-Holiday COVID-19 Testing

With COVID-19 transmission levels and respiratory viruses increasing, the L.A. County Department of Public Health Thursday urged residents to test if they have COVID-19 symptoms to prevent the spread of the virus in the post-holiday period. Health officials said free at-home COVID-19 tests remain readily available throughout the county at libraries, from many community-based organizations, food banks and senior centers, through the federal government by mail and at retail pharmacies with a California health insurance plan. Most at-home tests can be safely used past the expiration date on the box, according to Public Health. For more information on how to check home test expiration dates and how to get free COVID-19 tests, visit ph.lacounty.gov/COVIDtests. People who test positive for COVID-19, especially those with underlying risk factors, should talk to a health care provider right away about COVID-19 medications. Taking an oral antiviral, such as Paxlovid, can prevent people from becoming very sick, help them feel better sooner and lower their risks of developing Long COVID, according to a statement from the department.

California Department Of Health Issues Warning About Shemshad Jam, Marmalade Sold In SoCal Stores

The California Department of Public Health Thursday warned consumers not to eat Shemshad's Mulberry Molasses and Mulberry Jam jarred food products sold in the Southland over contamination concerns. The food products were sold at local grocery stores, including Woodland Hills Market in Woodland Hills, Q Market in Van Nuys and Wholesome Choice Market in Irvine, the department said in a statement. The products were produced outside of the health department's cannery program oversight, making them susceptible to contamination with clostridium botulinum, state health officials said. They warned that ingestion of botulism toxin from improperly processed jarred and canned foods may lead to serious illness and death. The Los Angeles-based company, Shemshad, has not yet voluntarily recalled its Mulberry Molasses and Mulberry Jam products, according the health department. Shemshad did not immediately comment on the matter. The product is under the Shemshad brand name in 16 ounce glass jars with screw-on metal lids and dated "APR 25 2025."
