Los Angeles, October 27, 2009 -- Paul M. Weber, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League (LAPPL), issued the following statement upon learning that LAPD Deputy Chief Michael Downing has been selected as temporary Police Chief until Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announces his choice for the new Chief next week:

"Deputy Chief Michael Downing has an impressive record of experience in the LAPD. He possesses the skills to lead the Department in the interim before the new chief is chosen and sworn in. He values the traditions of the Department. We are confident he will serve the city in an effective and informed manner.

"As the Mayor continues the selection process for Chief of Police, speculation swirls over who will replace Chief William Bratton. If chosen to lead the LAPD, the League is confident it can work with Deputy Chief Charlie Beck, Assistant Police Chief Jim McDonnell or Deputy Chief Michel Moore. We are ready to welcome the new Chief of Police and look forward to working with him during an extremely challenging time in the City and Department's history. In the meantime, we look forward to working with Chief Downing in this time of transition."
