South LA morning shooting leaves man dead

A man died on his way to the hospital after he was shot in South Los Angeles Monday morning, officials said. The shooting occurred at the intersection of W. Florence Avenue and S. Broadway in South LA’s Florence neighborhood around 6 a.m. Investigators said after the victim was shot, he crashed into a pole in front of a bus stop and Jack in the Box. When first responders arrived at the scene, they found the shooting victim slumped over the steering wheel of a white pickup truck. Police said the victim died on the way to the hospital.

22-year-old man shot, killed while driving in Sun Valley neighborhood

A 22-year-old man was shot and killed while driving in a Sun Valley neighborhood on Friday. The shooting happened at around 9:15 p.m. in the 8600 block of Morehart Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Officers arrived to find the man, who has not yet been identified, inside of a car which had crashed into a parked vehicle. The man was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Increasingly over the last five years, police officials say, thieves from South American nations have entered the U.S. for the purpose of committing robberies. In the case of Chile, authorities suspect some criminals are taking advantage of the tourist visa system, which does not require a background check for travelers. Once in the country, police say, they plan heist sprees and fence the loot before dispatching their earnings back home. LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton told The Times that South American theft groups are not new in L.A., but they have become more active in recent months.

Thieves steal from 3 Southern California churches

Congregants of three separate churches across Los Angeles have been left shaken after their houses of worship have been hit by thieves. In South L.A., Zion Temple Community Church members gathered for Sunday service where they were reminded of their faith, even after their van, used to deliver food to those in need, was stolen. Zion Temple Community Church is not alone. Two other churches in L.A. County were also recently burglarized.

Man Wounded in Playa Del Rey Shooting

An argument between two men resulted in a shooting that wounded one of the men in the Del Rey Lagoon area of Playa Del Rey, authorities said Monday. The shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. Sunday in the 6800 block of Esplanade Street, according to a dispatcher at the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center. The victim and suspect, both believed in their 20s, argued before the suspect produced a handgun and fired several shots at the victim, she said.

Man carjacked Mercedes-Benz at knifepoint, led officers on pursuit: LAPD

Police arrested a man after he allegedly stole a vehicle at knifepoint and led officers on a pursuit throughout the Los Angeles area. According to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department, the carjacking occurred just before 3 a.m. near 6th and Flower streets in downtown L.A. Preliminary information indicated that the suspect carjacked three occupants in the black Mercedes and then fled the area, traveling on the 105 Freeway before merging onto the 110 Freeway and exiting at Rosecrans Boulevard.

Video shows woman sent flying after being hit by car doing donuts in LA street takeover

Shocking video shows a California woman go flying after she was struck by a car doing donuts during a Los Angeles “street takeover.” The blonde woman is seen in the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and West 63rd Street in the city’s Hyde Park neighborhood over the weekend as a black sedan tightly circles around the crossroads, the footage shared online shows. She tries to dodge out of the way of the oncoming car but as it swings around it hits the woman and sends her flying through midair.

Police searching for hit-and-run driver who struck, seriously injured 62-year-old man in Koreatown

Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck and seriously a 62-year-old man in the Koreatown in late-February. The incident happened back on Feb. 20 at around 6 a.m. as the man walked across a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Venice Boulevard, according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators say that as the man walked across the road, a gray late-model SUV driving eastbound struck him as they made a turn onto Venice Boulevard. Instead of stopping to help the man, they fled from the area.

1 dead, 1 hospitalized after motorcycle, bus collision in Valley Glen

A person is dead and another is hospitalized after a motorcycle and a bus collided in Valley Glen Friday morning. The crash was reported at about 11 a.m. near the intersection of Hazeltine Avenue and Bessemer Street, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. A motorcycle carrying two people and a bus crashed into each other, resulting in one death and one transport to a hospital, the Los Angeles Police Department said. That person’s condition is unknown.

A coroner is now suggesting that Mei Li Haskell might still have been alive while she was decapitated, according to an autopsy report obtained by multiple media outlets this week.

1 dead, 1 hospitalized after violent crash in North Hollywood

A collision in North Hollywood claimed the life of one driver and sent another to the hospital, police said. According to information from an LAPD spokesperson, the crash happened around 12:40 a.m. at Sherman Way and Tujunga Avenue and involved two vehicles. One of the vehicles was traveling on Tujunga when they ran a red light and struck another vehicle heading eastbound on Sherman Way, the spokesperson confirmed.

Mother arrested in Arcadia nearly 2 years after 5-year-old boy found dead in suitcase in Indiana

The mother of a 5-year-old boy found dead in a suitcase in Indiana has been taken into custody in Arcadia in connection with his death, authorities announced. On April 16, 2022, the little boy's body was found in a brightly colored suitcase with a Las Vegas design in a rural area of Washington County, Indiana, authorities said. Six months later, the boy was identified as Cairo Jordan of Atlanta. Police said he was 5 years old when he died. Police announced in October 2022 that an arrest warrant was issued for Cairo's mother, Dejaune Anderson, for murder, neglect of a dependent resulting in death and obstruction of justice. Anderson was apprehended Thursday night in Arcadia, Huls said. She is being held at a Los Angeles Police Department detention center, he said.

Good Samaritan stabbed while trying to break up fight in Westminster

A 35-year-old man is in custody Saturday in connection with the stabbing death of a good Samaritan who attempted to intervene in a violent dispute between roommates in Westminster. Westminster Police officers were called at approximately 1 p.m. Friday to the 7300 block of 21st Street regarding reports of a stabbing and upon their arrival found multiple residents of the apartment complex holding down the suspect, Isaias Saquic-Saquic of Westminster, said Sgt. Alan Aoki of the Westminster Police Department. During their investigation, officers learned the suspect had earlier engaged in a physical argument that became violent, with Saquic-Saquic allegedly stabbing his roommate and a neighbor, 48-year-old Westminster resident Alvaro Martin Perez, with a knife during the confrontation, Aoki said.

Suspect detained in New Mexico state police officer’s killing

A suspect in the shooting death of a state police officer was captured Sunday by law enforcement officers in the Albuquerque area based on a tip from a gas station clerk, authorities said Sunday at a news conference. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office detained 33-year-old Jaremy Smith of Marion, South Carolina, in the southwestern reaches of Albuquerque after the clerk notified authorities of a man who fit Smith’s description, Sheriff John Allen said.

What happens to detainees if state shuts down LA County juvenile halls? No one knows

The Los Angeles County Probation Department does not have a contingency plan ready for the possibility the state will force it to close its two largest juvenile detention facilities on April 16, a situation branded as “irresponsible” by one oversight commissioner. Los Angeles County Probation Chief Deputy Kimberly Epps announced the department’s stance Thursday, March 14, to the county’s Probation Oversight Commission, telling the commissioners the department has not “begun plans to relocate and we will not begin plans for a coordinated relocation” of the two juvenile facilities, Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall in Downey and the Barry J. Nidorf Secure Youth Treatment Facility in Sylmar.
