Van Nuys gang gets hit with injunction

A permanent injunction restricting the gathering of members of the Barrio Van Nuys gang was granted Thursday by a judge, the City Attorney's Office announced.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge William Fahey approved the permanent injunction, which establishes a 4.7-square-mile zone limiting certain activity by the gang. The affected area is bounded by Sherman Way to the north, Woodman Avenue to the east, Burbank Boulevard to the south and the San Diego Freeway to the west, according to the City Attorney's Office.

The injunction limits the ability of gang members to associate in public with other gangsters. The order also forbids gang members from intimidating witnesses, selling or having drugs or possessing weapons or graffiti tools.

Gang members also are prohibited from entering or remaining on the school grounds of Van Nuys High School during school hours or during a school-sponsored event.

Members of Barrio Van Nuys meet, fight, paint graffiti, threaten and intimidate students and actively recruit new members at or near the high school, according to the City Attorney's Office.

The complaint filed by the City Attorney's Office includes 85 law enforcement declarations regarding the gang's alleged terrorizing of members of the community through assaults, threats, graffiti vandalism, trespassing and loitering on public streets.
