While reviewing today’s news stories, we were surprised to see a Daily News article in which several city officials commented that the contract negotiations are very close to being completed. City Council President Eric Garcetti was quoted as saying, “I am optimistic this week we can wrap them up…” And apparently the Mayor’s spokesman, Matt Szabo, had a similar expectation when he stated, “We are hopeful and optimistic that it will conclude this week.” While we are working tirelessly to secure a fair contract with the city, the negotiations are still ongoing and we don’t think projecting a date that we will come to an agreement is warranted. LOS ANGELES, October 1, 2009 -- In response to news stories prompted by city officials on the status of labor contract talks, Paul M. Weber, President of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, issued the following statement:

"The Los Angeles Police Protective League and the City of Los Angeles remain in negotiations for a new contract covering more than 9,900 LAPD officers. Public comments made by city officials earlier today on the status of the contract talks are premature and contrary to a confidentiality agreement between the parties. The LAPPL Board of Directors remains committed to ensuring our members receive a fair contract while preserving public safety and the long-term financial viability of the City of Los Angeles. "
